How Important is Hiring the Right Lawyer?

Hiring an experienced divorce attorney for your case can make a significant difference. There are any number of factors that can unexpectedly arise in a divorce, and without someone familiar with the law and court processes, a small issue may negatively affect you for the rest of your life. Divorce is serious business, involving the separation of a family and their property, and the last thing you want is to be given the short end of the stick due to lack of legal counsel.

Attorney Vetrano's Case Demonstrates Importance of Representation

I was involved in a case a few years ago that really highlights why an attorney is so important. My client asked me to take over her case after the first lawyer needed to take an unexpected leave of absence. I was facing an excellent trial lawyer on the other spouse's behalf and I had little time to prepare the case to go to trial. Many firms will not take a case at the last moment, but my legal team is prepared to handle cases like this at a moment's notice. At trial, the opposing counsel and I argued about each issue in the divorce until we were out of breath. However, one important detail was overlooked by their legal team that I recognized as being important.

My client's ex-spouse had sent an email to her illustrating how the entire case against her had been concocted to coerce the judge to award him custody. I used this email to confront the opposition, which did not recognize how the email could influence the case and push the issue into my client's favor.

Upon closing arguments, I wanted to make sure that the email was recognized by the judge as being instrumental to the outcome of the case. I re-read the email, word-for-word, to emphasize that my client's former spouse had invented a legal case in order to gain custody of their children. The judge in the case saw what I did in the email, and ruled in the favor of my client, allowing her to retain the custody of her children, and upbraided her ex for using such disgusting tactics.

Without the help of a talented, knowledgeable and experienced family law attorney, the judge may never have seen or recognized the importance of the smoking-gun email that gave my client custody of her children.

If you are in doubt about whether or not you need an attorney in your divorce case, refer to my story about how evidence that was overlooked by the opposition and the judge at first eventually became the trigger needed to shift the court's opinion to my client's favor.
